Everyday, people sit on chairs, sleep in beds, and eat from tables. All these items are of furniture, the movable equipment of a home. At one time, furniture was hand made, so most homes contained only basic, functional pieces. Most modern furniture is mass-produced by machine-made parts rather than handcrafted. Furniture includes objects such as tables, chairs, beds, desks, dressers, cupboards, etc. usually kept in a house or other building to make it suitable or comfortable for living or working in. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Furniture in fashion has been a part of the human experience since the development of non-nomadic cultures. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and lighting, comfortable and convenient interior spaces. In furnishing a room, people try to choose colours, pictures, fabrics and furniture that go well together. This process is known as interior design.
