The Island of Singapore lies in Southeast Asia, at its southernmost tip and gained its independence in the 1960s. It is a plural society, where people live together, but follow their own culture, language, and way of life. Singapore is largely flat and is built-up, making it almost a single city-state. It has a humid tropical climate type throughout the year. The main languages are Malay, Mandarin, English, and Tamil. Singapore harbor is one of the busiest ports in the world and more than 25,000 ships dock at this harbor every year. Many banks and the stock exchange generate about one-quarter of the country's wealth alone. This country has several orchid nurseries, as the land for farming is scarce. Mandai Garden is the largest commercial nursery in Singapore. Exotic and rare flowers are cultivated intensively for export activities. Singapore's economic future is predicted to be in the high-tech skilled fields.
