Algeria is a North African country that was under the French rule from 1830 and won its independence in the year 1962. It is the tenth largest country in the world. The capital and largest city of Algeria is Algiers. Algeria's population accounts to about 39.5 million people. Algeria consists of 40 cities with more than 100,000 people. More than four-fifths of Algeria is desert. Therefore, 90 per cent of Algerians live in the north of the country where the temperature is cooler. The main languages spoken are Arabic, Berber, French, Tamazight. Algeria is the world's sixth largest producer of dates. The Algeria currency is called as Algerian dinar.
